There's a lot of differences between Belgians and Estonians, both have their pro's and cons and since so many have asked me what's so different, I decided to do a seperate blog post about it :) P.S. from now on I'll also be writing (at least trying to) in English because many people tell me that they'd also like to read my blog but google translate is not doing it's job.

- Friendly and open. In Estonia you walk around on the street with your head to the ground, trying your best to avoid any sort of eye-contact. Here people sometimes even say hi to strangers. Of course not on the busiest street ever but ie. when we're walking somewhere with the family and somebody comes toward us, we say hi.Everybody smiles here all the time, when I make eye-contact with somebody in the class, somebody that I might not even be good friends with, I always receive a smile and often also a wink.
- Abivalmidus.
- Helpfulness. Everybody's so helpful here, for example on my first day of school, when I didn't understand the slightest, people came up to me and told me that if I need any help, then just ask. And when somebody sees that I'm probably not understanding something, then without even asking for help, somebody is willing to translate for me.
- Pereinimesed.
- Family people. Family plays a huge role in people's lives here, and they spend a lot of time together and are very close with each other. At first it was even a bit weird for me to see how close they are, hugging and the cheek kisses but now I'm getting used to it. Children are also quite dependant on their parents, I'd say Estonians are a lot more independent.
- Kool.
- School. School is very important for students and I'm not saying that Estonians don't give an f but here failing a test is basically the end of the world. Quite often I see that somebody starts crying and goes out of the class, when they receieve a bad mark on their test. But I totally understand them, here there's no such thing as re-taking the same test, when you failed, that's it. Having to re-sit a year is not as rare as it would be in Estonia. since in almost every subject there's an excam, twice a year! then even failing one test normally means that you have to re-sit a year.
- Tolerantsus.
- Tolerance. I've mentioned it many times before, but Belgians are honestly super tolerante. Whether you're black, asian, gay, bi, mulim etc, they really just don't care, everybody is treated equally and there's no bullying or intolerance.
- Stiil. Meigi poolest on silmalainer nende holy grail.
- Style. Most of the sudents at least in my school are very stylish and every day their outfit is on point. In Estonia I sometimes went to school with a hoodie and I wasn't the only one but here I don't see anybody with "comfy clothes". Makeup wise, eyeliner is their holy grail. Everybody wears it - students, teachers, parents, even if you don't have anything else on your face, eyeliner is still there. In addition to that, they also constatntly use deodorant, in the beginning and end of every lesson they spray it and then you walk around in class through a hugh puff of smell.
- No taboo topics. Friends share very personal things with each other and this is totally normal, there's no beating around the bush and no subject is embarrassing. At first it was a bit unusual for me when after just a few weeks of knowing each other, people told me their secrets, but I find it so nice that everybody's so open about eveything.
- Peod.
- Parties (no, not the political parties, though this is a whole other subject). In Belgium there's something going on every weekend, and if it happens that there's a free day in the week, then they also noramlly organise something. The parties here are also different, youth movements, such as scouts and chiro, are very popular here amongst students. These organizations constantly organize parties and thanks to that there's a lot of strangers in one party, thus you can meet a lot new people. The members of those movements hand out flyers near the exit of the school, inviting random people as well as their friends to their parties. Going back to the first point, people here are very friendly and open, so they quickly embrace new people.
- Kodutööd. Kõik asjad triigitakse läbi (vähemalt minu peres ja enamuste mu sõprade peres ka) ja prügi sorteerimine on igal pool väga tähtis, kodus on selleks vähemalt 3 erinevat värvi suurt prügikasti.
- House chores. Everything finds it's way to the ironing board (at least in my family and in most of my friends' families) and recycling is a huge deal, there's at least 3 different coloured big bins in your home.
apparently Belgians do |
- K3. This year a TV-show was organized to find 3 new members to replace the old ones in a popular band, that makes music for children (aged 3-12). These songs are so stupid but everybody knows the lyrics better that their own national anthem's. Over 6000 grown-up woman signed up for the show to become the new member of the band.
- Texting. The main communication here is by sms'ing people. They don't really use facebook messenger or whatsapp. The reason is probably because everybody has these kind of phone plans where they get a certain amount of sms's free, I, for example have to pay 15€ a month and for that I get 10 000 sms's, 1GB internet and 150min of calling.
